Frequently asked questions

The cost of being a scout varies slightly from group to group. The local scout groups set their own membership fee in addition to a fixed amount that goes to the national association the group belongs to. It often costs around 1000 NOK per year to be a scout.

The membership fee includes regular scout meetings, insurance, and membership magazines. Some scout groups choose to include the cost of trips in their membership fee, while it in other groups comes as an additional cost. Ask your local group for more information about membership fee.

In scouting, we wear scout neckers to show the relation we share with other scouts both in Norway and internationally, and to clearly indicate when we are participating in scouting activities. In many scout groups, the necker is included in the membership fee.

Many also wear a scout shirt, but you are not required to have one. Some groups have arrangements for loaning scout shirts. Check with your local scout group before purchasing necker and scout shirt.

If you are between 16 and 25 years old, you can become a rover! As rover you decide what you want to do and how often you arrange meetings and trips. Many rovers also help out as leaders in the scout group they belong to.

Anyone over 17 years old can become a leader or volunteer. There are no requirements for knowledge or equipment to become a scout leader. You learn what you need by participating in our activities.

Leaders are essential for running scouting activities. As a scout leader you can choose in which way and how much you want to engage in scouting. Whether you want to help out a couple of times a year or participate in every meeting, you are important to scouting!

What do I need to become a scout?

Personal outdoor equipment

For our meetings, it’s an advantage if you have clothing that keeps you warm and dry. It can also be useful to have a headlamp or flashlight, a scout knife, and a sitting pad, but many groups have such equipment available for loan.

You will need some personal outdoor equipment, such as a large backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, wind- and waterproof outerwear, and hiking boots or sturdy shoes for our hikes, but you can try borrowing this equipment from someone you know or lending centers such as BUA.no. Scout groups usually have common gear like tents, camping stoves, and such for shared use.

Don’t buy equipment right away

If you’re unsure whether scouting is for you, you can borrow equipment from someone you know or from lending centers like BUA.no for your first trips. You can try out the activities and gear and more easily find the equipment you’re happy with later on. You can also apply for financial support for basic equipment from the scouting organizations – the Norwegian Guide and Scout Association or the YWCA-YMCA Guides and Scouts of Norway.

About the Norwegian Scout Movement

There are two Guide and Scout organisations in Norway, the YWCA-YMCA Guides and Scouts of Norway (green shirts) and the Norwegian Guide and Scout Association (grey shirts). Norwegian Guides and Scouts participate internationally through the global Guide and Scout organisations WAGGGS and WOSM. The YWCA-YMCA Guides and Scouts of Norway are also members of the YWCA and the YMCA. The two organisations do several projects together such as hosting Roverway 2024 and Speidernes Landsleir 2025.
